This is our dog, Elli, and we just celebrated her second Birthday on August 7th, 2011. Some people may think we’re a tad strange for actually having a little party for a dog, but she is a big part of our family, and her Birth is a celebration just like it is for the rest of us. Our 10-year old daughter was especially excited for this occasion! So much so that we needed to purchase a canine “party hat” in addition to a dog toy; Lexi chose a stuffed green snake that squeaks and Elli, without a doubt, loves it. It is so funny to watch her bolt throughout the house, quickly jumping on and off all beds (she’s very agile), while gnawing down to make the sounds that apparently get her more adrenalized.
For those of you who wonder what breed of dog she is… She is a Finnish Lapphund, a.k.a. “Lappy”. Her breed originates from Lapland (the northern region of Finland, Sweden and, in part, Russia). Lappies are known as a reindeer herder of the semi-nomadic people, the Sami. They are considered a medium sized spitz type. For more information on this breed, please click here.
Her breed is pretty rare here in the States and was only just recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club) this year, but has been recognized by the UKC (United Kennel Club) since 1994. When we put our deposit down for her back in August of 2009, we were told that there were approximately 350 in the U.S., and she was the first one to reside in Ohio.
Aside from that, Elli is the BEST dog ever! She has the best temperament, is very affectionate towards people, is extremely intelligent, and absolutely adores her “human sister”, Lexi.
