I’m registered with Digital Photography School and received an e-mail on Creating and Lighting a Scene on a Home Depot Lighting Budget, which I found very informative. My daughter and I decided to hit Lowe’s yesterday so I could buy a 500W Stand Work Light (the 250W set I also wanted was out-of-stock… Bummer!). I also purchased a Portfolio Spinning Disco Ball because my daughter said she “just had to have it” for her bedroom… “It would be so much fun to turn on when I have sleepovers!” (I instantly starting singing “Dancing Queen” in my head.)

I was looking forward to learning more about taking portraits with indoor lighting, but since my daughter was “in the mood” to photograph with me, we figured that taking pictures of the spinning disco ball would be a fun project for the two of us last night. It was still pretty light outside, so we decided to go into her bathroom and turned off the lights. We set up my camera on a tripod and the rest is history. The first set of pictures are what I captured (in an attempt to show how shutter speeds work) and then I’ll also include some of what she captured 🙂

All of my pictures were taken with my Canon EOS 40D and Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. My camera was set in Shutter Priority at ISO 100, with no flash.

Shutter Speed: 1/8 sec; Aperture: f/3.5

Shutter Speed: 1/5 sec; Aperture: f/7.1

Shutter Speed: 0.3 sec; Aperture: f/13.0

Shutter Speed: 0.5 sec; Aperture: f/5.6

Shutter Speed: 0.8 sec; Aperture: f/6.3

Here are some of the pictures my daughter took. She was hand-holding our Canon PowerShot SD950 IS Digital Elph.

Amazing how a 10-year old’s perspective makes me want to further experiment with this $14.95 light (I must add, while ABBA is playing in the background). Stay tuned 🙂
