Here’s a simple black and white of a rustic water tower from our road trip yesterday. This was taken at the Chilo Lock 34 Park, located on the Ohio River in you guessed it… Chilo, Ohio; just a hop, skip, and a jump from where we were headed… Utopia.
Utopia happens to be where we were searching for an underground church that was supposedly built and used by a colony of spiritualists in the 1800’s, which was led by John Otis Wattles. Legend has it that this is where they would communicate with spirits. There’s also speculation that it could have been an Underground Railroad stop.
These pictures aren’t the best, but here are two different views looking down into what is believed to be the main chamber…
Here are the steps that lead into it…
Unfortunately, we were not able to get in because the fence was padlocked and we are not into the breaking and entering thing. Luckily though, we were able to track down the current owner’s of the land. Because of recent tornados that went through the area, the holder of the key wasn’t home; she was off helping others in need. Kudos to her!
Her father–what a sweet man!–gave me her number so I’m hoping to schedule a time where we can meet in the near future. I would love to hear what she has to say about the folklore and get pictures of what’s inside.
There’s much more to the story so please stay tuned. 🙂
